The kings of Sweden, Carlos XVI Gustaf and Silvia, saw again today the Pyramid of the Magician, in the archaeological zone of Uxmal, after their first visit to Yucatan 42 years ago.
The kings did not send any message to the representatives of the Mayan and Yaqui ethnic groups, nor the Yucatecan society represented by Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal.
They limited themselves to listening to the welcome speeches in Mayan, Yaqui, and Spanish that staff from the Swedish embassy translated into English.
The official speech on behalf the monarchs and the government of Sweden was the Minister of International Cooperation for Development of Sweden, Johan Forssell, who thanked them for the warm welcome given to them by Edgar Peraza Chan, Joaquín Cota Buitimea, traditional governor of the Yaqui people, and Governor Mauricio Vila.
The king and queen wore light clothing due to the high temperatures in Yucatán. Carlos XVI wore a white long-sleeved shirt, beige pants, and brown moccasins. His outfit was completed with a small brown hat and glasses.
The queen wore a colorful dress with figures of Yucatan birds, low Chanel shoes, brown and beige, and dark glasses that she took off for the official photograph. At all times she wore the green shawl that the poet María Casanova Ferráez spontaneously gave her when she finished her recitation and a brown hat that was also given to her by staff from the State Government, who distributed this craft among the women of the European delegation.
Both monarchs walked from the site of the formal ceremony to the Pyramid of the Magician, along with the governor, the federal Secretary of Culture, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, a representative of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who also did not send a message.
The monarchs arrived at the archaeological zone of Uxmal in the company of Governor Vila Dosal at 3:57 p.m. and posed for the official photograph at the foot of the Pyramid of the Magician at 4:51 p.m. However, the visitors did not leave at that time but instead began a tour of the archaeological zone with their respective delegations, which took them another long stay at the site of the pre-Hispanic Mayan culture. The King and Queen arrived at the Mérida airport on a commercial flight shortly after 11 in the morning. They signed the book of distinguished visitors of the air terminal and with their visit, they inaugurated the premier lounge of the Merida airport.
