On Friday, March 1st. in the Ejidal headquarters of this town, a sterilization campaign for dogs and cats was carried out, which arrived for the first time during this administration in one of the Progreso’s coastal communities, since it had only been done in the municipal seat.
Before the surgeries began, there were already about 70 furry patients at the site accompanied by their human families, and as the minutes passed, more arrived.
The campaign was carried out in coordination with the Yucatán Health Services, which brought 14 veterinarians to take care of the operations.
In addition, there was support from Ecology staff for the transfer of the animals, among other tasks. In total, 30 people were working in different areas such as registration, anesthesia, surgeries, and recovery.
Veterinary doctor Daly Martínez, state zoonosis program coordinator, spoke about the benefits of sterilizing male dogs because they no longer go out into the streets in search of mating with females in heat.
In this way, it helps to reduce the rate of animals that wander on the streets, which could bite a person or cause some other accident. He stressed that the recommended ages for pets to be sterilized are between 2 to 4 months.
For his part, Augusto Navarrete Hevia, deputy director of Ecology of this port, stressed that this edition and the one that will take place on Monday the 4th in Chelem are limited to 100 pets.
However, those who do not have space can go to the Ecology department of this port, where approximately every 2 or 3 weeks, depending on the influx and availability of doctors, low-cost sterilizations are carried out so that people can sterilize your dog or cat.
He stated that this effort was possible because of the state agency, which opens the possibility of more campaigns being carried out in the other police stations of Progreso such as Flamboyanes, Paraíso, San Ignacio, and Chuburná Puerto, which they will try to visit before the current administration ends.
During the day, attention was drawn to the owners’ dedication to taking their pets. After having operated on their pets, some approached the recovery area with great concern to pet them and talk to them so that they would regain consciousness as per medical indication.
