After several events were recorded that included graffiti on the Felipe Carrillo Puerto monument on Paseo de Montejo, the destruction of fences and graffiti on the Music Palace, the Modelo School building, and burning in front of the Government Palace, feminist associations expressed their rejection to these acts and accused the infiltration of a “political group” during the demonstration.
On its Facebook page, the Red de Acompañamiento Yucatán A.C., which participated in the march, stated that “a political group infiltrated the march, diverting several companions towards the center of Mérida, specifically towards the main square. They beat at least one member of our security committee, they stated.
“As part of the organization of the #8marzo2024, we want to communicate that this group does not represent us. Enough of politicize and take advantage of our march and the feminist movement; “You do not represent us, the organizers of the march are non-partisan,” the message reads.
The statement released indicates that “more than 2,000 women demonstrated peacefully, including housewives, elderly women and girls during the 8M march in this city.”
According to the text, “The peaceful march was marred by a group of women hooded in black, who set fire to the fences of the monument to Felipe Carrillo Puerto and the fences that were installed in front of the Government Palace, tried to tear them down and made graffiti on them, as well as other acts of “vandalism.” The women set banners on fire and threw paint bottles at the fire department agents who came to stop the fire, the information released adds. On Paseo de Montejo, after the women’s demonstration concluded, firefighters put out wood and banners that they burned a few meters from the Monumento a la Patria.
