The rough – toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) is a species of dolphin that can be found in deep warm and tropical waters around the world.
Thanks to the timely report of residents of the port of Santa Clara, Yucatán, the stranding of a rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis), was attended by specialists from the Yucatan Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Program ( Picmmy ) of the UADY.
The experts transferred the dolphin to the field station of the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS) in Dzilam Bravo to give it adequate attention, monitoring and evaluation.
According to information from Picmmy, the specimen had several wounds caused by a larger predator, presumably an orca (Orcinus orca).
The specialists indicated that taking into account the stability of the dolphin’s health and that the injuries present did not compromise its life, they decided to release it in deeper waters, where the dolphin swam in a fixed direction towards the north until it was lost from sight.
Picmmy personnel maintain surveillance on the Yucatecan coast throughout the week, including the port of Progreso, where another stranded dolphin was reported a few days ago.
Rough-toothed dolphins are common inhabitants of the Yucatecan coast, as well as the Gulf of Mexico. They feed on fish, octopuses and squid, both in coastal and oceanic habitats.
