Local bookstores report between 10 and 12 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Within the framework of International Book Day, which is celebrated on April 23, so far this year there has been an increase in the sale of literary works in bookstores, since, compared to the same period in 2023, there is an increase between 10 and 12 percent, this upward trend mainly reflects the decrease in prices and the positive impact that institutional book fairs have had.

Among the most in-demand titles is “Thank you,” from the President of the Republic, positioning itself as the best-selling book of this season; It is closely followed by “El llano en llamas”, by Juan Rulfo, a classic work that continues to captivate readers, however, this demonstrates the diversity of literary interests among the public and the continued relevance in the current publishing landscapeof works, both contemporary and classic.

“Educal” bookstore supervisor, Rubén Darío Blanco Sanz, mentioned that the trade of titles in his bookstore has experienced a notable increase due to the Price reduction. “Educal” located on 61st Street in downtown Mérida.

He added that among younger customers, the influence of YouTubers drives purchases, while adults show a preference for topics related to history, politics, and culture. Given the proximity of “Children’s Day”, and although no special activities will be carried out this year, discounts of 50 percent will be offered on collections from the General Directorate of Publications, and 40% on the Laberinto publishing house.

On the other hand, Stefania Cardeña Soberanis, responsible for sales at the Dante bookstore, located next to Centro Cultural Olimpo mentioned that the most popular books consumed by young people include hits from YouTubers, as well as romantic novels such as “Through your window”, by Ariana Godoy
