Made up of activists and residents of the port, which in 2020 was declared a Magical Town, the new association Unidos por Sisal will also be in charge of stopping and preventing the construction of illegal real estate projects.
Accompanied by Juan Carlos Cabeza López and Víctor Paré, residents of the port, Guillermo Acosta Simón assured that they have already filed several complaints against real estate projects that do not comply with the regulations of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) and the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
“Unfortunately, many of these developments are being carried out without permission, without a license due to misinformation, ignorance or lack of knowledge on the part of the owners, managers or developers, architects and the sellers themselves.”
In addition, he pointed out that the projects have deforested up to 90% of the land when the law states that 60% must be respected and that they have even made the first dune disappear.
“It is a terrible ecocide, it is irreversible,” he highlighted.
“We are here to defend a voice that cannot defend itself: nature,” said Guillermo Acosta Simón when announcing the emergence of the Unidos por Sisal association.
Acosta Simón mentioned that the developments are located in the areas known as Sunset Shores and Sunset Beach.
When mentioning several of these projects, he said that one is already under construction even without permits and despite having two denials from Semarnat.
In his opinion, the real estate boom has made developers look at Sisal as a potential area to do business.
“What they don’t think about is why this type of construction has not been done before because it is not allowed.”
“We have the opportunity as Yucatecans, we have the opportunity as a state that loves nature and respects it, to tell the developers: it will not be allowed here.”
The main points of Unidos por Sisal are Sustainable economic development, Development with environmental responsibility, and Respect for the community and its allies. Guillermo Acosta Simón, member of the Unidos por Sisal association, pointed out that they will seek to promote responsible tourism, demand services from the government, and respond in case of emergencies and natural disasters. They will also seek participation in urban planning decisions, control of illegal constructions, and promotion of environmental education.
