After two cases occurred last Saturday and Sunday that almost ended in tragedy on the beaches of Chuburná and Progreso, in which people nearly drowned after drinking alcohol, the authorities reiterated the risks of entering the sea in those conditions.

The Municipal Police of Progreso reported that municipal personnel carry out surveillance in the area and take special care of drunken people when they try to enter the sea.

Blue Flag lifeguard personnel also commented that they continually make calls for attention to visitors in obvious unwell condition. Still, the majority ignore the recommendations, causing the lifeguards to be on the lookout.

For his part, the commander of the Ecological Police, Obdulio Mena Sánchez, pointed out that along the international boardwalk of Progreso, the situation is monitored by agents, who in addition to supervising proper environmental actions, are also on the lookout for people under the influence going into the sea.

He added that they urge drunk people not to enter the sea, and when they become impertinent they are detained, to prevent them from putting their life in danger.

As has been reported, this holiday season Progreso has recorded three rescues in cases of drowning, where all have been saved and have recovered satisfactorily.
