A wave of sargassum has begun to reach the beaches of Chabihau, Yucatan, after it remained absent during the Holy Week and Easter holiday season, despite the northern winds. Locals indicated that the seaweed unexpectedly landed during the night of Monday, April 8.
One of the reasons for the arrival of this organic garbage is the entry of Cold Front No. 45, which is scheduled to enter the Peninsula before the weekend. It is worth remembering that months ago this problem was the trigger for the large amounts of algae that accumulated on the shore of this port.
The people of Chabihau pointed out that when they went out for a walk on the shore during the morning they noticed the arrival of sargassum, which they saw piled up on the sandy beach and invading the channels that connect with the swamp. “The sargassum has already started to arrive again, the predicted storm is the possible cause,” said Guadalupe Pech, a resident of Chabihau.
During the vacation period, the sighting of these plant organisms was zero, even though north winds were recorded during the last two weeks, paralyzing the fishing activity. Locals believe that this situation could affect tourism. “Sometimes people leave because of the algae,” Pech continued.
At the beginning of 2024, the accumulation of this oceanic waste completely covered the shore and soon an unpleasant odor began to emanate due to decomposition. “At the end of last year the amount of sargassum that landed was enormous, even in January and February there was a record. It smelled like rotting seafood,” said Guadalupe.
In the port of Chabihau, there are no personnel in charge of removing seagrass, unlike other ports such as San Crisanto, where there are groups of volunteers who go out once a week to remove organic and inorganic waste along the coast, to keep the beaches clean.
