Girls, boys, and adolescents from Cozumel participated in the 2024 kite contest “Fly with Quintana Roo”, at the Revolución Sports Unit, expressing their creativity, with different shapes and colorful designs with the theme of the 50th anniversary of Quintana Roo, representing elements distinctive features of the state such as its flora, fauna, culture or iconic landscapes.
The competing kites had to fly and stay in the air for at least five minutes at a certain height in a stable manner.
Another requirement that the contestants had to meet was to make the kites with recycled and biodegradable materials for the production of the kites, promoting environmental sustainability.
Before the contest, the participants received a talk given by Mauricio Hernández García from Civil Protection, who explained the reasons why they should not fly kites in the streets and the recommendation is to do so in open areas such as fields, always in the company of an adult.
The contest was divided into two categories: Children from 8 to 12 years old and youth from 13 to 18 years old. The criteria to be qualified were: originality and representation of Quintana Roo, functionality in flight, and quality of construction.
Among the jury was Professor Veudi Vivas Valdez, who enjoyed the flight of the kites, sharing with the contestants and their families in an event in which family unity, teamwork, and fun in a healthy way stood out.
The winners of the children’s category were, first place went to Fredy Rodolfo Utzil Xicum with his kite “Estrella Dorada”, second place went to José Alberto Utzil Xicum with “Cozumel” and third place went to Kevin Gael González with “Octágono”. In the youth category, first place went to Gael Issac Abraham Cohuo with his kite “Rehilete” (pinwheel), second place went to Omar Eliel Tuyub Chávez with “Cubo” and third place to Emily Anahí Tuyub Chávez with “Caracol” (snail). Likewise, a special award was presented to Valentín Estrella May for his kite “Cancún 50”.
