The streak of sales of electric vehicles in Yucatán over the last five years continues in 2024. In January there was an increase of 21.88% in the commercialization of these units, compared to the same month of 2023.
According to the information released yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), regarding the “Sale of hybrid and electric vehicles”, in the first month of 2024, 195 units were sold (160 hybrids, 26 electrics, and 9, plug-in hybrid). In January 2023, 165 were sold (63 hybrids, 17 electric and 7 plug-in hybrid).
The figure for the first month of this year, in terms of distributed electrical units, also exceeds that of January 2022, when 75 cars were sold; from 2021, with 41; and in 2020, 34.
In 2023, 1,161 of these units were sold, an increase compared to 2022 of 37.23%, according to information from the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles of the Inegi.
From 2020 to date, this environmentally friendly vehicle, also known as “green”, has registered good demand among Yucatecan buyers. In that year, 61 cars of this type were sold (54 hybrids, 5 plug-in hybrids, and 2 electric); In 2017, the increase was 50.8%, with 92 units sold (89 hybrids and 3 plug-in); In 2018, sales increased 120.6%, with 203 (174 hybrids, 28 plug-ins and one electric). For the year 2019, 12.8% was obtained, with 229 cars sold (212 hybrids, 14 plug-ins and 3 electric). In 2020 there were 274 (250 hybrids, 4 electrics, and 20 plug-ins); In 2021, the total was 601 and, in 2022, 790.
A car is called a “hybrid” when it is powered by two engines that may be different: for example, an internal combustion engine and one (up to two) electric motor. With this configuration, a hybrid car can take advantage of both sources to obtain energy and move economically with excellent performance. Hybrid vehicles can circulate either in a combination of both motors or purely electrically.
While conventional vehicles run on fuel, hybrid cars, and trucks combine electricity and fuel to power their electric motor and internal combustion engine, leading to savings on gasoline or diesel and generating lower carbon dioxide emissions. Currently, different brands are already venturing into the production of electric cars and it is expected that, in the short term, they will be more common and cheaper. Hybrid units, which cost between 750,000 and 950,000 pesos, are chosen for fuel savings and because they are environmentally friendly. In the case of electric cars, the average cost is 920 thousand pesos and one charge has an average performance of 150 kilometers.
