Faithful devotees celebrated the traditional Alborada that marks the beginning of the festival in honor of the Christ of the Transfiguration in Chumayel, Yucatan.

From early in the morning, bags with beef and cut onions were distributed to the collaborators so they could taste them at home. More than 90 pig heads were collected in the scoop. The families met at the home of the Pech Peraza family, who this year fulfilled their promise to organize the traditional Alborada 2024 guild, in the town of Chumayel.

On the night of Alborada, the revelers shined in the evening that was enlivened by the Noh-Beh revelry orchestra.

In an atmosphere of joy, there was a massive participation of devotees of the Christ of the Transfiguration.

In 2025, the organization of the guild will fall to the Itzá Ek family, who received a pig’s head, which represents the first fruit, as a symbol of commitment to organize this guild.

The Christ of Chumayel: An emotional celebration

The Christ of the Transfiguration was lowered in the church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, where Catholics showed signs of faith and devotion.

The religious venue looked full, “as if it was a family Sunday.”

Meanwhile, in the streets, the roar of the fireworks in the air could be heard.

The emotional moment came when the custodians went up to open the door to the main niche of the altarpiece and lowered the Christ while the mariachi sang the song “Viva Cristo Rey.”

The saint wore a shroud, whose mantle of arms had three hearts: one with seven swords, one with the lily wand, and one with the crown of thorns.

The hearts represent the Holy Family of Nazareth: the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and Jesus.

The outfit was donated by the devotee Gener Ku Ruiz, who in 2023 made a promise to the Christ of the Transfiguration.

During the descent of Christ, 351 “Milagritos” (little miracles) and 58 hearts were placed on it.

Other faithful offered the saint flowers, floral arrangements, Charanga music, mariachi, decorated gourds, as well as disposable cups, soft drinks cakes, and cochinita tacos. On the occasion of the annual festival, hundreds of visitors are expected to arrive in the town of Chumayel.
