A forest fire in El Cuyo has devastated more than 10 kilometers, destroying drinking water pipes and light poles
A large fire that started seven days ago left the port of El Cuyo without electricity and drinking water, in addition to causing serious damage to the flora and fauna of the Ría Lagartos Federal Reserve of the Biosphere. The fire has destroyed more than 10 kilometers of forest and 2.5 kilometers of pipeline.
The conflagration spread for more than 10 kilometers until it reached the aforementioned natural area. It is estimated that 15 light poles were consumed, so the community will remain incommunicado and without electricity while the service is restored, as well as the supply of drinking water, given that a pipe that transports the resource to the community was also burned.
Mayor Pedro Francisco Couoh Suaste revealed that more than 2.5 kilometers of conduits were lost, the repair of which will cost a lot of money and take a long time; however, he reported that specialists have already come to assess the damage.
The staff of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) and the Fire Brigade have been working since the case began so that the fire does not continue to expand and continue to affect this important reserve, which is the habitat of thousands of animals.
It is estimated that over the last 20 years, this has been the second-largest fire recorded in the area. On this occasion, the loss of flora and fauna was lamented as a result of the flames that have destroyed everything in their path.
Extraordinarily, the flames stopped 300 meters before entering the San Manuel Wildlife Management Unit (UMA), a reserve that became a refuge for the region’s mammals, birds, and reptiles while the first rain fell. rains and burned ecosystems recover.
Meanwhile, the fire continues to be fought as the personnel of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) arrive with cranes loaded with poles to change the ones that were consumed by the fire, and the workers of the Drinking Water System analyze the damage to the pipes. so that when the power service is restored, the pumps are also connected to supply the community with water resources as soon as possible.
