A possible short circuit destroyed at least 12 palapas (palm roofs) in the restaurant area on Pedro Sainz de Baranda Avenue, next to the baseball stadium in Campeche.
Shortly before midnight the fire started and lasted until early Sunday, May 12, when the emergency services were alerted to go and put out the fire in a palapa, but in minutes the fire spread to other palm roofs.
Campeche police, Municipal Civil Protection, firefighters, and ambulances arrived at the site; Agents from the Navy and the National Guard also arrived. At least eight palapas burned completely and others were affected, since the fire spread very quickly, noting that there were about 12 that were damaged.
During the fire, people heard noises inside the businesses due to the burning of what was inside. The restaurateurs tried to rescue what was left. However, the authorities kept them away because of the risk of an accident, since there were gas cylinders inside the place.
Fortunately, there were no human casualties, only some people who were fighting the fire suffered smoke inhalation, but nothing serious.
It turned out that the cause was possibly a short circuit, but the authorities will be conducting the corresponding investigation.
It is not the first time that fires have occurred in these places, but this time it was huge, therefore, the authorities will have to take action so that this does not put at risk the lives of owners, employees, clients, and passersby.
