Merchants and residents on 20th by 19th Street, in the Chuburná de Hidalgo neighborhood were left without electricity so they blocked one of the busiest streets in the area.

Due to the damage, those affected blocked 20th Street, one of the busiest avenues in the area.

Likewise, residents of the Ampliación Nueva Mulsay neighborhood have been without electricity for more than 24 hours, they point out that the case was reported to the CFE but so far it has not been attended to. In Kanasín, a metropolitan municipality of Mérida, for three days there have been blackouts throughout the day, which last up to 6 hours.

It should be noted that the third heat wave of the year has arrived with force in Yucatán, and temperatures are expected to reach record levels.

According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), due to this wave, temperatures will exceed 40 degrees Celsius and cause thermal sensations of 50 degrees. The extreme heat, combined with the harsh drought, has increased energy consumption due to the use of air conditioners, refrigerators and fans, causing electrical blackouts and suspension of water supply.

For his part, the president of Canaco Mérida, Levy Abraham Macari, pointed out that the constant failures in the electricity supply have generated significant economic losses for businesses. He stated that 70 percent of the more than 5,000 businesses affiliated with the chamber have experienced some type of impact or failure in service in recent weeks.

He warned that the situation could worsen if the blackouts continue, as this could lead to a shortage of perishable products and a greater impact on businesses’ finances.
