A report by AC consultants reveals that 81% of the country’s territory lives under siege by organized crime groups; In this context, Cozumel, Quintana Roo, a beautiful island located in the Mexican Caribbean, known for its impressive natural beauty and its coral reef, is in the crosshairs of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the new object of desire of the drug trafficker in Mexico.

During the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Cozumel wages a war between organized crime groups that dispute the territory for drug distribution, which caused a significant increase in murders like never before in its history.

This is the second most populated island in Mexico, the leader in receiving cruise ships worldwide, and the cradle of political power in Quintana Roo, suffering from the arrival of organized crime, mainly criminals who identify with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

An investigation indicates that members of the CJNG—which, according to AC Consultores, a strategic, tactical, and operational security intelligence consultancy, has a presence in 27 states in the country—months ago began an attack against local criminal groups that had maintained control of the drug transfer that takes place there.

In less than three years—during AMLO’s administration and with the state government of Morena—, this place went from being a peaceful island with the world’s first cruise ship docking location to a place where crimes against humanity have become common. against life, that is a high impact.

According to data from the Comprehensive Port Administration of Quintana Roo, tourist activity on the island reflects impressive data in 2023.

Meanwhile, figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System report that the homicide rate increased starting in 2021.

Previously, the average of these cases was one to two deaths per year. But for almost three years, murders have not stopped increasing, in a town that has a population of around 88 thousand inhabitants.

So far during the current municipal administration, 36 homicides have occurred, taking into account the last three months of 2021.

Although these figures are far from those in other states of the country, the upward trend causes concern on the island, as it aims to become a place with the same situation that prevails in other tourist destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, where homicides due to drug trafficking do not stop and have already left collateral damage among the population and tourists.
