On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 29, an elderly woman was charred to death when she became trapped in a plot at the Xkampepén community, while she was burning a cornfield with her father.

Agricultural burning takes place every year in Yucatán and other states in Mexico, as it helps enhance crops and grasses for pasture. However, the smoke can also help degrade air quality.

Around 2 in the afternoon, Nicolasa N., 65 years old, and Severiano N., 80 years old, went to their cornfield to carry out their traditional burning.

However, due to the wind conditions that suddenly shifted, the fire changed its trajectory, and father and daughter were left in the middle so that neither could get out.

Nicolasa lost consciousness after inhaling smoke, in a matter of minutes the fire engulfed her and she was charred to death. His father also fainted, but the fire did not advance to where he was.

Relatives of the victims found out what had happened and immediately notified the emergency numbers. Firefighters arrived at the scene to put out the fire, which was already threatening to advance towards the town and rescued the unconscious elderly man.
