If you make crafts with techniques, materials and designs from the peninsula, the call for the second State Popular Art Contest 2024 in Yucatán has been opened, which rewards artisans who have proposals that give value to the arts of the region.
This contest has the objective of promoting the production of distinctive crafts from the state of Yucatán that, through the stimulation of new creations, promote quality productions.
The call is made through the Ministry of Culture, the National Fund for the Promotion of Crafts (Fonart) and the Yucatecan Institute of Entrepreneurs (Iyem).
In order to participate in the call, it is essential to be Yucatecan, therefore, with respect to article 5 of the Political Constitution of the State of Yucatán, it is established that they are Yucatecan:
“a. All those born within or outside the territory of the State, of Yucatecan parents; b. Nationals originating from other Entities of the Mexican Republic, who have resided in the State for six consecutive months; and c. Foreigners who are naturalized in accordance with the Laws of the Republic and who have resided in the state for six consecutive months.”
Some of the participating categories are: carved wood (altarpieces, sculptures, reliefs, masks); henequen and sansevieria; filigree; hard fibers (vine, gourd, lek, calabash, coconut); and handmade jewelry (seeds, henequen thorn, course and bull bone, palm, among others). Within these categories, the State Award will be awarded.
Among the important bases is that: the work must have been made during 2024, it must be unpublished and cannot have been previously exhibited or awarded or be subject to the decision of any other contest.
The work must be authored by the person submitting it, and if necessary, explain whether it has one or more authors.
If the works are made with any protected material, the artisan must present the current official documents that authorize its use.
The call is open until June 22, during which time the pieces to be entered into the competition can be registered at a Registration Center to be determined. The winners of the call will be announced on June 23, 2024 and the awards ceremony will be held at a public event on June 27, 2024.
Sixteen prizes will be awarded in a total purse of 100 thousand pesos. The State Award will be 20 thousand pesos and each category will have three first place winners, the first being eight thousand pesos, the second five thousand pesos and the third three thousand pesos.
