Experts point out the need to be prepared for these dangerous weather phenomena.

At the 19th edition of the International Hurricane Seminar, which took place in the city of Mérida at Hotel Fiesta Americana, a fundamental need for specialized training to mitigate the devastating effects of natural disasters and protect lives in the face of a possible cyclone.

This seminar, which ends today, began yesterday at 9:00 in the morning, inaugurated by the regional director of Grupo Asur, Héctor Navarrete Muñoz, who in his initial speech mentioned the emergence of the seminar in 2005, after the ravages caused by Hurricane “Vilma” in Quintana Roo, emphasizing the importance of preparation before, during and after such events in Yucatán.

“With these phenomena, you have to be in tune, and know what to do before, during, and after, that is the essential objective of this seminar,” he highlighted in his speech. “It’s the first bell of the season, we have to start working before the hurricane season starts. “What this seminar does is remind us of what those of us who have the responsibility of managing airports have to do,” he said.

For his part, the director of State Civil Protection, Enrique Alcocer Basto, recognized the importance of collaborating with meteorology experts to manage the risks associated with hurricanes, highlighting the efforts of the state government in preparing temporary shelters, relief protocols for the population and constant monitoring of atmospheric phenomena through the Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Center.

During the presentations, doctors Lixion Ávila and Omar García, meteorology specialists, discussed the lessons learned from Hurricane Otis, which impacted Acapulco last year in 2023. Lixion Ávila highlighted the performance of the European meteorology model in cyclone forecasts, although, In the long term, the US National Hurricane Center remains the most accurate.

The event also featured the participation of prominent personalities, such as the mayor of Mérida, Alejandro Ruz Castro; the United States consul in Mérida, Dorothy Ngutter; and the administrator of the Mérida Airport, Óscar Carrillo Maldonado. The event program was made up of three conferences on the tropical storm “Otis”, where specialists will discuss the actions and mechanisms that occurred with this weather phenomenon, the scope of its impact on the civilian population, and also the tools and requirements that were implemented. They were presented at the Acapulco airport for the transfer, collection, and distribution of aid to the population after the phenomenon.
