The sale of cold drinks soars in downtown Mérida

With temperatures exceeding 104 °F at noon in Mérida, the consumption of drinks and refreshing products to mitigate the heat tends to skyrocket.

In the streets of downtown, you can see people carrying plastic bottles, thermoses, canteens, or plastic and styrofoam cups loaded with cold water or some other drink.

It is striking that, despite the intense heat, businesses with a tradition of selling fresh water, ice cream, ice cream, and popsicles around the Plaza Grande these days have almost no customers.

People have preferred to visit other establishments because in the area there is a lot of dust and noise from heavy machinery due to the renovation work in the main square.

In the Janitzio ice cream shops and the Sorbetería El Colón there were very few people, those who were there preferred to settle inside to avoid the dust and noise.

Most shoppers order drinks to go, convenience stores are selling a lot of bottled water and soft drinks, the latter in 600 ml presentations.

Other businesses sell glasses of fresh water or juices with plenty of ice, at prices from 40 to 60 pesos. Popsicles and water ice creams sell from 35 pesos and up to a liter of ice cream for 160 pesos.

Ice pops are perhaps one of the most practical and economical alternatives in the hot season, whose price ranges between 15 pesos and 20 pesos. They are a frozen flavor that can be enjoyed little by little almost anywhere without taking up much space.

In downtown, it is still possible to see the traditional popsicles and ice pop carts, a cooler equipped with wheels with which the seller travels the streets advertising his product.
