Yucatán increases hotel occupancy; it would be a refuge from blackouts

The permanent summer season in Yucatan maintains good occupancy in the State’s hotels and attracts national, international, and peninsular tourism as if it were a vacation period, considered the president of the Mexican Hotel Association, Juan José Martín Pacheco.

The businessman highlighted that, although May is considered a month considered low season for tourism, the extreme heat season gives it a touch of early summer vacation, so the arrival of visitors is continuous and permanent.

In May they expect a hotel occupancy of 45 to 60% or at least equal the percentage of 57% last April during the Easter holidays.

Martín Pacheco commented that in addition to renting rooms for tourism, the extreme heat felt in the State is also bringing people to hotels that have emergency electricity generation plants due to the frequency of blackouts in the State.

“Many people have come to stay in hotels for the comfort, both because of the extreme heat and the blackouts,” he said. “It is not a very high percentage, but people do go to rent the rooms because the hotels are not only for tourism but for Yucatecan society in general.”

The prolonged warm climate of Yucatan “as if it were a permanent summer all year round” is beneficial for the tourism sector because it maintains the flow of visitors in any month of the year, he added.

The rate of arrival of tourism this month is normal. In this industry, there are two curves, one in May and the other in September. In May, the season of extreme heat is normal, there are traditional celebrations such as Mother’s Day, and Teacher’s Day.

“In September it is the return to school, in that month almost no people go out due to returning to school and the expenses on school supplies and uniforms.”

The leader recognized that there is a growth in tourism visiting Yucatan and this is reflected in the stay in hotels. Before, it was 1.7 nights and today it is 2.4. Those visitors who come for business stay in Mérida, but those who come for a walk visit Valladolid, Izamal, the Puuc Route, the archaeological zones, the cenotes, the beaches, and other tourist attractions.
