Under the slogan “Planting trees, cultivating water”, the Governor, Mauricio Vila Dosal, and the Mayor of Mérida, Alejandro Ruz Castro, inaugurated the 11th Forestry Crusade of this year, which includes the planting of 8,500 trees in the municipality to reach the 150,000 that the current municipal administration has as a goal for 2021-2024.
At the “Henry Martín” Southern Sports Unit, the Governor and the Mayor planted a 1.80-meter-high Jicarito tree, accompanied by students from the Academic Unit of Community Interaction High School (UABIC), representatives of civil society, members of the Advisory Council for Sustainability in the Municipality of Mérida 2021-2024 and public officials.
Governor Mauricio Vila recalled that during his administration more than 1 million trees have been planted and that the year will end with 1.2 million trees planted in the 106 municipalities of Yucatan.
«In Merida alone, the City Council and the State Government have managed to plant 600 thousand trees in the last 6 years. So what we ask of the people of Merida, of the citizens in general, is that if we want the environment to improve, we have to take action, which is to plant, but also to water, maintain, and take care of what we are trying to do,» Vila said.
As part of the efforts to continue planting trees in Yucatan, Vila Dosal stressed that with the support of schools of the State Government, 175 thousand trees have been planted through the program “One Child one Tree”; in addition, with the network of sustainable universities, 3,600 trees have been planted.
The 8,500 trees that will be planted in the 2024 Forest Crusade, added to those that will be delivered through the programs “Adopt a Tree” and “Days in Public Spaces”, will cover the 11,691 missing trees to reach the goal of 150 thousand trees projected in the current administration.
