Tons of asphalt were spilled by a dump truck that overturned when it was climbing the bridge at the San Pedro Nohpat junction on the Mérida-Cancún highway, on this Friday morning.
The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene of the accident.
The vehicle was traveling towards Mérida carrying several tons of asphalt, and just as it began to climb the San Pedro Nohpat bridge, the operator lost control of the steering wheel, apparently because he fell asleep for a few seconds.
The dump truck went to the right, crashed, and ripped a section of metal containment fence, and from a small height, it fell off the bridge, overturning on its right side and spilling a large part of its load on the side road.
Municipal Police officers arrived on site along with paramedics. They treated the truck driver for minor injuries and bruises while the former took note and secured the area to avoid more accidents.
A large towing truck was needed to lift the dump truck, while workers from the same cargo company collected what they could from the scattered asphalt.
