A social media user identified as Makario Villafaña managed to capture on video the moment when a whirlwind of air formed in the esplanade of the Sitpach sports field, in Mérida.

The phenomenon is known as an air vortex, which forms when warm air from the ground rises rapidly and encounters a colder layer of air. If the hot air continues to rise, the rotation intensifies, forming the characteristic whirlpool.

Users on social media were amazed by the fact, but unlike tornadoes that are usually devastating, these types of whirlwinds have a short lifespan and do not usually cause destruction, although they can lift some objects.

However, in most cases the air vortices only raise dust and garbage from the streets, other users highlighted. The video was shared from the user’s account more than 115 thousand times.
