The storm that hit Mérida on June 27 caused various damages, especially the fall of trees, some of them several decades old, including one in the Centenario Zoological Park.
The tree was 100 years old and it fell on the fence of the jaguar area. Fortunately, the big cats did not suffer injuries.
The Facebook page of the Mérida Zoological Parks: Centenario and Animaya confirmed the fall of the old tree and informed that they activated a security protocol to guarantee the well-being of the animals and visitors.
Park personnel moved the two jaguars to a safe area, where they will remain protected during the repairs to the enclosure, and safety conditions are back to normal.
On Friday the 28th, the Centenario did open but the zoo area was closed. The traditional train did not operate.
On Saturday, June 29, services would resume completely, as they would conclude with the corresponding repairs. It should be noted that more days of rain are forecast for the Yucatan Peninsula, due to a low-pressure system associated with tropical wave number 6, with 30% becoming a cyclone.
