On June 27, the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS) admitted the citizen complaint against the “Santa María” pig farm, operated by the company Chumoxil owned by Oswaldo Loret of Mola Coldwell.
This action generated the temporary suspension of the Environmental Impact Manifesto Evaluation (MIA) procedure.
The complaint, filed by a resident of Santa María Chí, points out multiple environmental irregularities arising from the farm’s operations.
The accusations include the lack of Environmental Impact Authorization for the activities, the emission of greenhouse gases harmful to the environment, and problems related to inadequate wastewater management, among others.
As a result of this admission, SDS has instructed the Department of Environmental Assessment to suspend the pending MIA assessment and has scheduled an inspection visit to verify the allegations.
This measure occurred after the publication by the SDS, on May 30, 2024, of the “Granja Santa María” project in the Official Gazette of the State of Yucatán, where the public was called to present observations and mitigation proposals during a public consultation period.
On May 16, 2024, the Third District Court in Yucatán issued a definitive suspension in the amparo trial promoted by Wilberth Alfonso Nahuat Puc, Sub-Commissioner of Santa María Chi, prohibiting the SDS from authorizing the MIA and carrying out supervision acts on the pig farm.
The community of Santa María Chí continues to remain vigilant regarding the developments in this case, while environmental authorities continue with the relevant investigations to safeguard the natural environment and the health of its inhabitants.
