Possible formation of a tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico

Authorities monitor the possible formation of a tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico

HURRICANE SEASON 2024

The National Water Commission (Conagua) reported this morning that the low-pressure zone located in the Gulf of Mexico increased its probability of becoming a tropical cyclone in the next two days.

According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), at 06:00 hours this Monday, June 17th, the low pressure increased its possibility of cyclonic formation to 70%, with a slow movement towards the west-northwest. Currently, this phenomenon is located 150 kilometers north-northwest of Sabancuy, Campeche.

Given this forecast, the National Weather Service decided to send hurricane hunters to investigate the possible formation of the first storm of the 2024 hurricane season off the coasts of Mexico.

As we have reported in The Yucatan Times, very heavy rains have been recorded in southern Quintana Roo.

The SMN and Conagua continue to monitor the evolution of the huge low-pressure system in the region and will provide regular updates on its development.

Local authorities are prepared to activate emergency protocols in case the formation of the tropical cyclone is confirmed.
