Teachers carry out “arms down” protest in 500 schools across Yucatán

After multiple protests by teachers held in Mérida, on Wednesday, June 5, in at least 500 schools in the entity, teachers showed up only to fulfill their schedule without teaching students.

This is as a peaceful protest against their situation and with the idea that they cannot be subject to an administrative sanction from the local educational authorities for not showing up to do their work day.

Last Tuesday, June 4, around 5 thousand teachers from sections 33 and 57 of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) demanded an immediate response to their requests for a salary increase and transparency in the application of said increase, the same as it should have been made official in mid-May.

Limbergh Santoyo Arzápalo, who heads several teachers who are dissatisfied with this situation, regretted that the leaders of the SNTE union sections in the entity are not supporting their members. This has caused discomfort among the teaching ranks, who feel abandoned to their fate by them and helpless by the educational authorities.

On the other hand, he assured that, although at the beginning of this fight many teachers, for fear of reprisals and discounts, refused to openly participate in the protests, the situation has escalated to such a level that now more and more are joining.

Proof of this were the strikes of two consecutive days at the end of May and the demonstrations carried out on Tuesday that included the momentary seizure of the facilities of the Yucatan State Secretariat of Education (SEGEY).

“This Wednesday, at least in 500 public basic education schools in the entity, there is a sit-down protest by teachers,” the teacher announced.

“They show up to do their work day but they are not teaching classes. This, in addition to being an expression of disagreement, is a way to avoid being administratively sanctioned,” explained Santoyo Arzápalo.

On Thursday, June 6, starting at 8 in the morning, the dissatisfied teachers will once again arrive at the SEGEY headquarters, and as a protest, they will close the access to it in a human chain for an indefinite period. The mentors warn that as long as their demands are not resolved, the protest and pressure measures by the teachers will continue.
