The State Government promotes the strategy Good Mosquitoes! “Uts K’oxol”, in conjunction with the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY) and the Michigan State University.

With the release of 170 thousand male mosquitoes with Wolbachia, the Government of the State of Yucatan launched the initiative Good Mosquitoes! “Uts K’oxol” with which it seeks to impact the reduction of cases of Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya in the state, since the released specimens will prevent the vectors that transmit these diseases from reproducing.

With this initiative that is carried out, prior to the rainy season, and in conjunction with the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY) and the State University of Michigan, the state government, through the Yucatan Health Secretariat (SSY), adds to the actions to prevent the transmission of these diseases, which include frequent junk removal campaigns promoted throughout this administration to prevent the spread of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

How Does Wolbachia-Aedes Suppression Technology Work?

How does releasing male Wolbachia-Aedes mosquitoes suppress Aedes aegypti populations?

  • When male Wolbachia-carrying Aedes aegypti (Wolbachia-Aedes) mosquitoes mate with urban female Aedes aegypti that do not carry Wolbachia, their resulting eggs do not hatch.

  • Over time, continued releases of male Wolbachia-Aedes mosquitoes will lead to a decline in urban Aedes aegypti populations. This not only reduces the risk of dengue, but also of other Aedes aegypti-borne diseases such as Zika and chikungunya.
