The expected rains in the Yucatan Peninsula have caused havoc in some municipalities, such as Chetumal, in Quintana Roo, where serious flooding has been reported.
The authorities had monitored 59 critical flood points and opened shelters for people living in vulnerable areas, according to municipal president Yensunni Martínez to local media.
Images quickly circulated on social networks of how the streets disappeared in Chetumal and nearby municipalities, where several vehicles have been left underwater, suggesting a serious emergency.
The authorities stated that for more than a week they have been working on clearing and cleaning the nine canals so that the water flows faster; However, the amount of water has exceeded what was predicted by the National Meteorological Service, and the drainage in some parts of Chetumal is insufficient.
The rains also brought power outages in several areas of the Quintana Roo capital, which is why authorities from the Secretary of Citizen Security remind citizens to call emergency numbers (911 and 089) in the event of any serious situation.
Shelters have been enabled to provide for families who need to leave their homes in case of flooding due to the intense rains that are being recorded in Chetumal, the State Coordination of Civil Protection reports.
After the torrential rains on Friday, June 14th, a bulletin stated that citizens have to observe caution at all times and not to circulate on the main roads due to flooding, until the water level decreases.
