Given the imminent arrival of Hurricane Beryl, various institutions in Quintana Roo have taken preventive measures to safeguard the safety of the population and cultural heritage.
Such is the case of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in the state and the Tulum International Airport, “Felipe Carrillo Puerto”, which stated their official social networks, given the trajectory of Hurricane Beryl that continues, until the moment, as a category 3 according to the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Given this situation, the INAH Center of Quintana Roo reported that the archaeological zones of the state and the Mayan Museum of Cancun will remain closed to the public from Thursday, July 4th, until Saturday, July 6th, 2024.
The Ministry of Culture of the Government of Mexico, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the INAH Quintana Roo Center, announced that, as a civil protection measure and within the framework of the Heritage Disaster Prevention Program Cultural (Previnah), the following archaeological zones and the Mayan Museum of Cancun will be closed:
Tulum, Cobá, Chacchoben, Dzibanché, Kinichná, El Meco, Xelhá, El Rey, Kohunlich, Muyil, Oxtankah, San Gervasio and San Miguelito.
It predicts that if Beryl passes without major consequences in the state, these sites will reopen to the public on Sunday, July 7, 2024, except for El Meco, Muyil, Kohunlich, Oxtankah, and Xelhá, which will remain closed due to construction works, as part of the Program for Improvement of Archaeological Zones (Promeza).
As previously posted in The Yucatan Times, the INAH Yucatán Center informed on July 3rd, that the Great Museum and the Archaeological Zone of Chichén Itzá will temporarily close as a civil protection measure.
