A 12-year-old boy was gunned down by individuals who were allegedly trying to kill a man in the beach area of the Riu Palace hotel, located at kilometer 5.5 of Kukulcán Boulevard in the hotel zone.

The events occurred at 3:40 p.m. when the 911 emergency center received a report of gunshots; therefore, the presence of the police and the support of paramedics was urgent, because a minor was injured by a firearm projectile on the beach, which was very busy. After all, it was a Sunday in the heart of Cancun’s “Zona Hotelera“.

Shortly after, members of the National Guard (GN) and personnel from the Tourist Police arrived at the scene where they confirmed that the minor had a wound in the chest, which is why they requested the intervention of paramedics as soon as possible, who provided him with first aid.

The paramedics urgently transferred the minor to a clinic, under cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers; however, he died while receiving medical attention in a private hospital.

Police sources said that the attackers arrived by sea on board two jet skis and had the purpose of executing a suspected drug dealer, who was unharmed by escaping and running through the beach area; so the authorities deduce that the minor is a collateral victim of the armed attack.

The teenager was enjoying the beach with his parents on Sunday, July 28; however, everything changed when the shots were heard and immediately witnesses saw how the boy suddenly fell unconscious on the sand.

Although the Cancun Hotel Zone is one of the most heavily guarded areas of the city, where state, federal, and municipal authorities concentrate reinforcements, the struggle between antagonistic groups of organized crime – who fight over spaces for drug sales – has generated several attacks right on the beach.

The most recent occurred on July 1, when two men faced each other with gunfire: one of them lost his life and, as in this case, a single mother was hit by a stray bullet, becoming the first collateral victim to die in the war between drug dealers.

The ferocity with which criminal groups are fighting in the Cancun hotel zone is because a marijuana cigarette increases its value by up to 600 percent on the beach: the same occurs with synthetic drugs, according to cannabis consumers consulted by local media in Cancun.
