After the recent rains, a plague of flies is reported in Mérida, which has become as annoying as the plague of mosquitoes that usually occurs when rain showers hit the region.

According to some specialists, this increase in flies is because the water-laden clouds during this time exert pressure on the earth’s surface, forcing these insects to descend from flight.

Although there are other reasons, according to Dr. Hugo Benítez, researcher at the Center for Research in Advanced Studies of Maule (Cieam) of the Catholic University of Maule, it is a fact that is the product of an artificial action of man that once again alters the balance. of the ecosystem.

“Any massive appearance of flies in a particular area is cause-effect. A stable or natural population of insects will always tend towards stability, this means that the boom in fly populations is a response to a process that is currently occurring and that has not been treated or analyzed by the corresponding means,” explained the doctor. Benitez.

“The sudden appearance of flies can have different causes, which could have been favored by occurring simultaneously, such as the accumulation of waste, the recent rains, and now the increase in temperatures”, continued the UCM researcher.

“The first cause is the increase in temperatures that produces an acceleration in the life cycles of these organisms, mixed with the thoughtless and poorly treated abundance of organic waste. Without a doubt, there is a lot of waste in a short time with the increase in temperatures and recent rain events causing a regrettable increase in flies,” the expert said.

Concerning how the community can protect itself from the massive appearance of these insects, the expert indicates that basic cleanliness measures are the main ones.

“Keep your waste in closed containers, wash the floors, keep the food safe from flies, and if it is a beekeeping area, take charge of cleaning the area. For people who own pets, they need to clean up the yard constantly from feces,” the specialist explained.

The most important point is that a plague of flies can represent a serious source of diseases that threaten people’s health, warned the Cieam expert.

“Flies can cause many diseases, it is undoubtedly important to look for solutions to these booms. Flies contain a load of bacteria that transmit different degrees of diseases, from cholera to salmonella, among others,” he said.
