Discontent over the removal of trees in the works of the Plaza Grande in Mérida

The removal of trees in the Plaza Grande of Mérida has caused discontent among downtown merchants and citizens who pass through the place.

A few days ago, social media users made images and messages go viral in which they reported the alleged felling of trees on that site.

On a tour of the area, it was possible to see what remains of the roots and the place where the trees were.

They removed trees around and in front of the city hall. Also, the decrease in green area and a small part with two bushes is evident.

Merchants in the area commented that the removal of trees began on Saturday afternoon and evening. They mentioned that, at first, they dug around the roots of the trees. They thought they would build pots to preserve them since they consider them to be young trees.

However, they were surprised when the machinery entered and lifted the trees to take them away. The fate of the trees is unknown.

The neighbors commented that this has caused them inconvenience and discontent since “they are destroying old trees.” Regarding the construction of the flowerpots, the workers built two large ones, one at the end that faces the Olimpo building and another at the end that is near the Cathedral.

About the work progress in the area, people can see the bricks for the floor and the trenches around the work. In the center, there are still mounds of earth, and some workers are in charge of freeing the roots from the removed trees.
