Several areas have been cordoned off after the roof of an old house collapsed in Downtown Merida.
The heavy rains that have affected the city of Mérida in the last two weeks have increased the risk of the collapse of roofs and old houses in the Historic Center and other parts of the state capital, which is why municipal authorities are keeping an eye on the reports and have urged people to avoid walking near these abandoned buildings.
On Sunday, June 30th, due to the rainfall that occurred since the morning, part of an old house located on 57th Street between 50 and 52 Centro, next to a well-known university center, collapsed. The Municipal Police of Mérida (PMM) had to cordon off the area to avoid further accidents.
Yellow tape was placed along the street, to prevent pedestrians from walking through said area.
In other parts of the Historic Center, such as on 65th Street between 42 and 44, and between 44 and 46, several abandoned properties are at risk of collapse, so pedestrians must take precautions. It must be remembered that at the time, the director of the Interior of the Mérida City Council, Ignacio Gutiérrez Solís, stated that in the Historic Center area alone, around 250 abandoned properties have been identified as potentially dangerous, and notices have been placed in several.
