On the morning of this Friday, July 5, in Progreso and its communities, the first effects of the proximity of Hurricane Beryl to the Yucatecan coast began to be felt.
Until that moment, the intensity of the winds did not put the safety of the population at risk nor could it cause havoc in the residential area of the port.
In the beach area and the docks, strong gusts of wind are felt, making that area the most dangerous at the moment.
At the Chicxulub Puerto fishing pier you can see the “choppy” sea, which already reaches the properties that are on the front line.
In the same way, gusts of wind are felt that manage to push a person who could be at risk of falling from the dock.
However, several people visited the place to take photographs and record videos even though the red alert was in force.
One of the temporary shelters was established in this community, located at the Benito Juárez elementary school.
Commissioner Miguel Ángel Canul Durán, whose team is in charge of feeding the refugees, indicated that so far only 5 people occupy the shelter, these are workers who arrived at the port from other municipalities and had to take refuge in this place.
He pointed out that at the Benito Juárez school there is a capacity for more than 300 people, while at the Nakuk Pech cultural center, the capacity is for 50 people; It is expected that, if the situation worsens, more people will decide to go to shelters.
