The United States ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, considered that our country requires a strong Judicial Branch, governed by law and with the necessary resources to function timely and expeditiously.
The diplomat was asked his opinion about the debate that exists in our country about the reform of the Judicial Branch and he said that there are several models and that the government of Mexico and the Legislative Branch will make the most convenient decision.
Ken Salazar said that in Iraq or Afghanistan, the Judiciary does not function effectively and even less so when there is no democracy. But in the United States, he has seen several models, such as in Texas, where all judges are elected, or in Colorado, where a bipartisan committee of experts gives three names to the governor and he chooses one; and after being on the Court for two years he undergoes a retention election and can stay for 10 years.
Regarding the expectations in the relationship that the United States will have with the next government of Claudia Sheinbaum, the ambassador trusted that it will be deep and lasting because there is a lot of work to do on the issue of security “and it will be the decision of the virtual President-elect and her team”.
The United States ambassador to Mexico also considered that Sheinbaum has formed a strong cabinet and that she maintains dialogue with the team because there are common ideas and interests; In addition, she knows the work of Alicia Bárcena, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, and Marcelo Ebrard.
