Locals accuse a foreign couple of taking over part of the beach in Chelem, Yucatán

Residents of the Chelem beach community, in the municipality of Progreso, reported that a foreign resident is trying to take over a large stretch of beach.

According to an article published by Mexican newspaper “El Universal”, those affected point out that the foreigner, who owns a house in front of the beach on 18th Street in Chelem, placed a wooden fence to prevent the passage of bathers.

Several fishermen reported that in recent days they were insulted by the resident and her partner, apparently Canadian, who do not allow them to leave their boats near their residence.

The fishermen even claim that they have been victims of verbal and racist attacks by other foreigners in the area.

Faced with this situation and seeing that the authorities do not act, a group of inhabitants of Chelem arrived at the foreigner’s house where they removed the wooden fence that delimited the stretch of beach.

Residents of the area stated that the foreigners claim that they have official documents, they claim to own the beach (which is totally false as all beaches in Mexico are Federal Property).

Apparently, neither Profepa nor the Progreso City Council have been able to solve this situation and just put an end to this illegality.
