To analyze the problem of sargassum and look for niche opportunities in the face of this natural phenomenon, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa inaugurated the Mexico-European Union National Forum to turn sargassum into an opportunity, with the presence of the ambassador of the European Union delegation in Mexico, Gautier Mignot.

Representatives of the delegations of the European Investment Bank for Mexico, linked to the Global Gateway initiative, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in Mexico, and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) in Mexico, participated in this Forum. federal government officials, members of the Mexican Congress, and civil organizations such as “The Seas We Love”.

Mara Lezama explained, during the opening message, that although this natural phenomenon affects Quintana Roo economically, the natural landscape, hotel and restaurant activity, nautical activities, etc., it also negatively impacts the reef system and natural wealth. of seas and beaches.

“Sargassum is a natural phenomenon that is here to stay, we have to work as a team to confront it. A state government cannot do it alone, and a municipal government or private initiative cannot do it alone, that is why I appreciate the presence of the delegations, to reach an agreement and know what we can do and confront a phenomenon of this nature,” said Mara Lezama.

She recalled that when she was municipal president of Benito Juárez (Cancun), she organized a campaign called “Everyone Against Sargassum” that added the collective effort so that from 7 in the morning they would work on cleaning up the beaches.

In the inauguration message, the governor of Quintana Roo highlighted that although great work has been done, with strategic projects, there is still a long way to go because sargassum is going to continue arriving, and that liability has to become active, in a niche of opportunity.

Governor Mara Lezama reiterated her support, backing, and 24/7 work for the care of sargassum, for the care of nature, and our ecosystems. “We have to find the solution, our coasts deserve it, our tourist destinations deserve it, the world deserves it. And it is very clear to me that nature wants to tell us something. We must take care of the environment, we must take care of our seas,” she pointed out.

For his part, the ambassador of the European Union Gautier Mignot stressed that this forum will be his last mission in Mexico and he is happy to close with a flourish in Cancun, in response to a problem that is here to stay.

He congratulated all those who have been involved in addressing this phenomenon and assured that there will be continuity in collaboration to turn it into an opportunity.

The Secretary of Ecology and Environment, Óscar Rébora explained that by the instructions of Governor Mara Lezama and the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo, in the Forum an exchange of knowledge, technology, and strategies was achieved between experts on the subject, to convert sargassum into an economic resource through innovative industrialization methods.

The president of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association, Toni Chaves, highlighted the joint effort being made to address sargassum under the leadership of Governor Mara Lezama. He emphasized that Quintana Roo is a leader and example in the Caribbean in the work around the Sargassum Dilemma.

René Orellana, representative of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), highlighted the link between the industrialization of sargassum and science, as well as the need to have specialized technicians to take advantage of sargassum for biogas and other applications.
