The Municipal President led the “World Tree City” recognition ceremony, as part of the Sixth National Tropical Arboriculture Forum (AMA 2024), held at the “Olimpo” Cultural Center on July 16 and 17, where Mérida, Like other cities in Mexico, it received this distinction.
“Our City Council has distinguished itself by promoting programs that strengthen green infrastructure with citizen participation, including our forestry crusades in which we plant trees in different parts of the city. We have also organized workshops, conferences, and forums where we seek to raise awareness of the importance that trees have for our city,” he added.
Accompanied by Ernesto Herrera Guerra, general director of Reforestamos México; Gabriela López Damián, director of Trees and Cities at Reforestamos México; Julio Sauma Castillo, Municipal Secretary, and Alejandra Bolio Rojas, director of the Sustainable Development Unit (UDS), the Mayor highlighted the progress in tree planting throughout the current administration.
“Before September, we will reach the goal of planting 150 thousand trees throughout the Municipality, adding the 8,500 that we proposed for the 11th edition of this Forest Crusade,” he added.
Ruz Castro thanked the Arbor Day Foundation, FAO-UN, and Reforestemos México for recognizing the city of Mérida for the fifth consecutive time. The cities of Toluca, Guadalajara (for the fifth time), Durango, and Irapuato also received the distinction, these two The latter received this recognition for the fourth time.
