Activist Kenya Cuevas revealed that violence against the trans community continues in the country.

Mexico ranks second in murders of trans people worldwide, only behind Brazil.

Activist Kenya Cuevas, director of the Casa de las Muñecas Tiresias shelter for trans women, reported in a press conference that more than 200 trans femicides were committed in Mexico during the last year.

The states with the highest rate of trans femicides in the country are Campeche, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Guerrero.

According to Cuevas, these indices coincide with reports from states with the highest levels of violence due to the presence of organized crime.

In Mexico, the life expectancy of trans women is 35 years, compared to 77 years for the general population. This average is similar in Latin America, although there are exceptions such as Chile, where it increases slightly to 37 years, and Argentina, where it decreases to 32 years.

These data come from a report prepared by Almas Cautivas, Equis Justicia para las Mujeres, and Casa de las Muñecas Tiresias, among other organizations.

The situation is a product of the violence that trans women face, as well as social, political, and economic exclusion.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has indicated that violence and discrimination against trans girls, boys, and young people begin at an early age, frequently being expelled from their homes, schools, families, and communities for expressing their diverse gender identities.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography registers 5 million people with a sexual orientation and gender identity belonging to the LGBTQ+ community in Mexico.
