The Quintana Roo Cyber Police Unit detected invitations to loot stores and other companies on social media on the eve of the arrival of Hurricane Beryl, for which the government reported that it is already taking energetic measures and will put a “strong hand” on those who participate, in them.
On Facebook, several events have emerged inviting the population to loot stores and supermarkets, taking advantage of the chaos and possible service failures that Hurricane Beryl could cause.
One of the events, called “My first looting of Cancún” is scheduled for next Friday, July 5, and the authorities already suspect who is behind these calls.
The Quintana Roo Cyber Police Unit issued a statement warning that there will be “severe legal consequences” for those who organize or participate in the looting.
Looting in stores is a crime that can be punished with sentences of two to fifteen years in prison.
The statement from the state government indicates that given the emergency caused by Hurricane Beryl, the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Quintana Roo has issued a strong warning:
“A strong hand will be applied against those citizens who organize or participate in looting and acts of vandalism in the state capital, with penalties ranging between two and fifteen years in prison.”
And this measure arises because groups of young people have used social networks to incite these crimes, taking advantage of the contingency.
For this reason, the Cyber Police Unit identified profiles on social networks that instigate the population to loot businesses. In response, the Unit has redoubled cyber patrols.
The agency reports that you can report suspicious profiles that incite the looting of businesses to the number 9988914051 to report it or contact the Quintana Roo Cyber Police Unit.
Thus, the authorities say they have intensified cyber patrols to detect and prevent illegal activity and will apply a strong hand against offenders. They warn that participation in these acts of vandalism not only has severe legal consequences but also puts everyone’s safety at risk.
