Progreso without internet: fiber optic facilities closed due to a debt

Economic disagreements between the Progreso City Council and a company that provides telephone, internet, and cable television services affect dozens of users. The latter works as a means of pressure, so the authority closed its fiber optic facilities.

Mayor Roger Gómez Ortegón said that the closure was because the company did not comply with the respective payments for the infrastructure installed in the municipality, which, according to the mayor, is greater than that reported to the authorities.

Since the middle of last week, the measure has been affecting residents of the west of the city, which includes the various neighborhoods and communities of Chelem and Chuburná.

Those affected expressed their complaints through social media and blamed the City Council for the interruption in the internet service.

Customers who contacted the company said they received a response that they had defects in their facilities and the service was working correctly. They even offered a technician to check the failure and repair it.

In this regard, the mayor confirmed the closure of fiber optic facilities in the western sector as a measure for the company to go to the City Council and pay the respective permits but did not respond to the invitation.

Gómez Ortegón recalled that the City Council closed the company’s fiber optics, and many users were left without internet last May. Authorities withdrew because of several complaints. However, given the company’s failure to comply, the measure would extend to more sectors.
