Summer vacations reactivate the economy in Progreso

In the first week of vacation in Progreso, the summer vacationers begin to arrive, mainly from Mérida, who temporarily inhabit the town during this period.

Generally, they are visitors with high economic income and with the ability to pay workers who maintain their properties for a year and are ready for their arrival.

During visits to the Progreso and Chicxulub Puerto markets, as well as private businesses, an increase in customers purchasing groceries was evident.

Some store owners, who were busier than usual, said that this holiday season would be a salvation for them due to the arrival of numerous families to Progreso.

It happens every year. The good thing is that when the season arrives, there are more sales because families from Mérida come with money, and we immediately realize it because we start selling more, said a merchant.

Several days a week, visitors send their workers and home caregivers to buy kilos of meat, fruits, and vegetables in large quantities, added.

It benefits us because we do not know how well the fishermen will do now that octopus fishing season begins. If they do poorly, we will not have sales either. However, as long as the vacationers are here, we will sustain ourselves, said one of the employees of a fruit store between Progreso and Chicxulub Puerto.

On the other hand, in a poultry shop in Chicxulub, sales have increased since they only sold 30 or 32 chickens a day. But on Friday, July 12, they sold 52, exhausting their stocks.

Each summer holiday, more people purchase in convenience stores and supermarket chains, where long lines form and parking lots are saturated.
