The Mérida councilors approved Mayor Alejandro Ruz Castro’s proposal to establish July 21 as the Municipal Animal Sterilization and Welfare Day, which will be part of the commemoration of World Dog Day.
The Mayor explained that this date, proposed by the Special Sustainability Commission, will help to raise awareness about the importance of sterilizing pets and avoiding the overpopulation of stray dogs and cats. They will increase the availability and access to low-cost or free sterilization programs.
Regarding sustainable development, the councilors also approved signing a Collaboration Agreement with the Mexican Association of Arboriculture that will give continuity to the environmental awareness and education activities considered in the Municipal Development Plan 2021-2024.
With this agreement, the tree planting work carried out in the Municipality will be reinforced. This program includes organizing and promoting events and scientific and cultural activities related to the topic and promoting the proper planting, installation, conservation, and care of trees.
This agreement also includes financial support from the City Council for 220 thousand pesos to develop activities focused on environmental education.
