The number of visitors to Quintana Roo has decreased by at least 33,700 tourists compared to last week after the impact of Hurricane “Beryl” was confirmed. Currently, authorities estimate 348,300 in all destinations in the state.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, in Tulum, which is one of the areas where the hurricane could impact, there are 29 thousand tourists. Felipe Carrillo Puerto and other rural areas are already being evacuated to protect locals and visitors, as well as in Holbox, where there will be efforts to ensure that those who wish to leave the island can do so in an ordered fashion.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the daily number of visitors has decreased by 8.8% compared to the beginning of the week, when a total of 382 thousand were recorded, mainly in the northern area of Quintana Roo. For their protection and safety, working groups are held with hotel associations, to identify shelters and the lines of action to follow.
The preliminary trajectory of the hurricane points toward the center of the state, so one of the points that could be directly affected is Tulum, where the presence of about 29 thousand tourists is estimated, which is four thousand less than last year, according to data from the Sedetur. The municipality has at least five refuges for tourists.
In the case of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, which houses the Maya Ka’an destination, it is estimated that 232 visitors remain in the area. Two communities were evacuated there, due to the risk it represents.
Bernardo Cueto Riestra, Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, announced that meetings are being held with all sectors of the private initiative, and municipal tourism representatives, to coordinate actions and be able to keep visitors safe.
In Holbox, although it is not a point where an evacuation is planned, those who wish to leave the island will be able to do so for free.
The destination has a current occupancy of 3,738 tourists and the Holbox Hotel Association stated the hotels offered their guests the possibility of leaving the island.
In the case of the hotel areas, they are already preparing to face the winds and rain that Hurricane “Beryl” could generate, and in the case of the Xcaret Group, recreational parks will be closed as a preventive measure. In addition, airlines have already announced support for travelers who have flights between July 2 and 5.
