A tower of rods that supported one of the bridges at the Tren Maya works in Xul-Ha, Quintana Roo, collapsed and crushed some workers. As a result of the accident, at least two men were injured, one of them with serious wounds.
The accident occurred around 6 p.m. on Monday, July 8, near the Xul-Ha community in section 6 of that railway project.
Xul-Ha is on the banks of the Bacalar Lagoon, part of the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, in Quintana Roo. Local media reported that it occurred when workers were assembling the metal columns. That was when one of them started creaking.
One of the people suffered severe injuries in the pelvic region after the column of rods fell on his legs. Due to the great weight of the column, his coworkers could not do anything to remove the structure.
Paramedics arrived and indicated that one of the men suffered a pelvic crush injury. They took him to a hospital.
According to local media, those in charge tried to hide the accident at the Tren Maya works.
Until July 9, the authorities have not commented on the events or the state of the injured. The Tren Maya official social media account commented on the matter.
On the same Monday, July 8, a house used as a warehouse for tools and alleged storage of dynamite exploded in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, with no injuries reported.
The property, on 43rd Street in the Javier Rojo Gómez neighborhood, was uninhabited because it was used for work allegedly linked to the Tren Maya, according to residents of the area.
The director of the municipal Fire Department, Neiro Alonso Cen, declared to the local press that at 3 p.m. yesterday, Monday, the emergency number 911 received the report of an explosion that shook residents of the neighborhood and the Juan Bautista and Rafael E. Melgar areas.
As they approached, the firefighters themselves heard another explosion. “It is indeed a dynamite explosion. It is a storage building. Thank God there is no one there right now. It is not inhabited, and there is only material damage,” said Alonso Cen.
The official attributed the reasons for the explosion to the “heat,” due to the intensity of the temperature, and the tin roofs of the two-story building that, due to the explosion, no longer exists.
