What to Do in Case of a Hurricane

Beryl is rapidly approaching the Yucatan Peninsula. These weather phenomena are powerful and can cause widespread devastation, bringing strong winds, heavy rains, flooding, and storm surges. Proper preparation and a swift, effective response are crucial to minimizing risks and ensuring the safety of everyone affected.

As this major hurricane approaches, it is essential to be well-informed and have a clear action plan. This article provides a comprehensive guide on the steps to take before, during, and after a hurricane to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property. Whether you are at home or need to evacuate, knowing what to do can make all the difference in ensuring your safety and well-being during one of nature’s most dangerous events.

According to the Plan de Protección Civil de Yucatan (Civil Protection Plan), these are the protocols to be followed before, during, and after a hurricane:

Before the Hurricane

  • If you are in a hazardous area and/or believe your house is unsafe, seek shelter.
  •  Secure your home and take essential items with you. These items can include important documents, medications, and a few days’ worth of clothes and food.
  • Staying informed is a powerful tool in your hands. It can help you make the right decisions and stay safe during the storm. So, keep an eye on the updates and remain calm.
  • Disconnect all appliances and switch off the electrical power.
  • Turn off gas and water faucets.
  • Inform others about any emergency messages.

If you decide to stay at home:

  • Protect animals and equipment.
  • Repair roofs, windows, and walls to prevent major damage.
  • Store fertilizers and insecticides in waterproof containers.
  • Prepare for potential evacuations of sick, elderly, children, or handicapped family members.
  • Establish a meeting place in case you get separated.
  • Have emergency items on hand, including a first aid kit, AM—FM radio, battery-powered flashlight, extra batteries, canned food, and plenty of water. These items can be crucial for your survival and comfort during and after the hurricane.
  • Secure loose objects such as flowerpots, garbage cans, and tools that could become dangerous projectiles.
  • Disconnect all appliances and switch off the electrical power.
  • Turn off gas and water faucets.
  • Remove TV antennas, signs, or hanging objects that could become a projectile.
  • Clean the roof, drains, gutters, and sewers to prevent blockages; sweep the street to uncover sewers.
  • If you have a well, seal your well cap to ensure a clean backup water supply.

During the Hurricane

  • Prepare for possible evacuation if you live near the sea.
  • Know the location of temporary shelters.
  • Stay informed with updates from official authorities.

After the Hurricane

  • Follow instructions from authorities.
  • Report injuries to emergency services immediately.
  • Ensure food is clean before consumption.
  • Stay in your home if it is not damaged.
  • Keep gas, electricity, and water disconnected until you’re sure there are no leaks or risks of short circuits.
  • Ensure electrical appliances are dry before plugging them in.
  • Remember, you’re not alone in this. Collaborate with your neighbors to repair the damage and rebuild your community. Together, you can overcome the challenges that follow a hurricane.
  • Eliminate standing water to prevent mosquito infestations.
  • Request help from relief brigades or authorities if necessary.

Patience is key. Do not rush back to an affected area until the authorities give the all-clear. Your safety is essential, so wait for their green light before returning.
