A United States government census revealed that more than half a million Yucatecans live and work in cities in that country, which doubles the estimates of the Institute for the Development of Mayan Culture of Yucatan (Indemaya), reported Erick Villanueva Mukul, general director of this state agency.
The official said that for years, Yucatán authorities believed that there were 180,000 to 250,000 Yucatecans in the United States. However, with the American census, they realized the immigrants doubled that number.
Villanueva Mukul highlighted that the migration of Yucatecans has been constant for more than 50 years. Nevertheless, no massive or tumultuous migration exists as occurs on Mexico’s southern border with Central Americans.
This significant number of migrants explains the increasing amount of remittances sent to Yucatán. This number also places the state among the states that send more migrants. The Yucatecan’s ability to adapt and knowledge of Yucatecan and Mexican cuisine, combined with Asian cuisine, has positioned them in a prominent place in this segment and the US economy. The director of Indemaya reported that Yucatán has the lowest deportation rates in Mexico, with 60 monthly arrests.
