In July, the regional historic record of heat stroke-related deaths for all of 2023 was surpassed

The Yucatan Peninsula reached a new record of deaths due to extreme heat in 2024: there are 24 deaths, three more than the historical record for 2023, the Ministry of Health (SSA) of Mexico reported today Monday.

In its report for week 30 of 2024, the SSA indicated that five people died in Quintana Roo and with them, the number of deaths due to extreme heat in that state increased from one to six, and the number of deaths in the peninsula from 19 to 24, reports the Ministry of Health of Mexico (SSA).

May 2024, with its 31 days, was more deadly than the 29 weeks of the entire warm season of 2023, which in Yucatan closed with a historic balance of six deaths, all due to heat stroke, and 103 people affected by heat stroke (82), dehydration (20) and sunburn (one).

In Mexico, the Extreme Heat Season covers weeks 12 to 40 of each year, according to the SSA. In 2023 it was from March 19 to October 7; in 2024 it is from March 17 to October 5.
