Mothers from the town of Tzucacab warn of bombardier beetles that cause skin burns. The women call to take care of the children since the color and appearance of these insects can attract their attention.
Mothers reported that this rainy season has led to the proliferation of beetles, including the bombardier species, which can expel a chemical that burns the human skin when in contact with them.
María Canché said that, a few days ago, a beetle got into her clothes. When she accidentally crushed it, the insect released a chemical that burned her skin.
Although the burn was not serious, the pain was severe, but it healed in two days without medical attention. The women of the community call to be careful with children because these insects have an attention-grabbing color that attracts the minors in the house because they believe it is harmless.
There are two species of beetles: one metallic green and the other metallic blue, and these sneak through the cracks of houses and hide anywhere. They get inside clothes and have a chemical with an unpleasant smell, María Canché commented.
For about four years, people had seen these insects at night and could even count them in dozens, she concluded.
